In the third quarter of 2023, investor attention turned from worries about an economic “hard
landing” to worries about persistently rising inflation, which caused most asset classes to have
small decreases. The Federal Reserve raised the target range for the Federal Funds rate in July
and maintained it at 5.25–5.50% during their September meeting. At 5.50%, the federal funds
rate is currently at its highest point.
